If you’re carrying a pocket of stubborn fat that just won’t go away, no matter how much you exercise and adjust your diet, you could consider a liposuction procedure to get rid of that fat for good. Every year, around 260,000 Americans have liposuction to shape and contour their bodies and finally get rid of frustrating pockets of fat. John Nees, MD, is a board-certified aesthetic plastic surgeon who performs a variety of liposuction procedures in Boca Raton, Florida. If you’re unhappy with extra fat on your body, call Dr. Nees or schedule a consultation online today to find out if liposuction can help you achieve your goals.

WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction, also called lipoplasty or lipo, is a surgical procedure that removes stubborn pockets of fat from your body. Dr. Nees uses liposuction to reshape your body and define your contours by removing excess fat and tightening your skin. It’s usually a minimally invasive procedure. Dr. Nees makes small incisions in your body and uses cannulas and suction to break up and extract your unwanted fat.

Even if you have a healthy diet and exercise regularly, you may be plagued by a stubborn “trouble spot” that doesn’t respond to your efforts. Your genetics contribute to your body shape, and in some cases, you may be predisposed to love handles or a deposit of fat on your belly or thighs. However, with cutting-edge liposuction techniques, Dr. Nees can remove that stubborn fat and give you the smooth, firm, body you’ve been working so hard to achieve.

WHAT ISSUES CAN LIPOSUCTION CORRECT?

Liposuction is a fat removal procedure for men and women. Dr. Nees performs liposuction to help you get slim and contoured. He offers liposuction to remove fat from your:

  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Waist
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Hips
  • Calves
  • Ankles
  • Upper arms
  • Neck
  • Chin
  • Cheeks

He can also use liposuction to treat gynecomastia — a condition that causes breast tissue to develop in men.

WHAT ARE THE AVAILABLE TYPES OF LIPOSUCTION?

Advances in plastic surgery have introduced several types of liposuction. Depending on the location of your unwanted fat and the amount of tissue that you want to remove, Dr. Nees may recommend one of the following approaches.

TRADITIONAL LIPOPLASTY

Dr. Nees uses traditional lipoplasty to remove fat from more substantial areas of your body, such as your abdomen, back, or buttocks. He performs traditional liposuction with intravenous (IV) sedation and a local anesthetic. During the procedure, Dr. Nees makes small incisions in your skin and inserts cannulas. He uses the canulas to break up your fat deposits before using vacuum suction to extract your unwanted fat. Dr. Nees can also remove lipomas (noncancerous fatty tumors) and the excess fatty tissue caused by gynecomastia.

POWER-ASSISTED LIPOSUCTION

Power-assisted liposuction uses a smaller cannula that vibrates to break up your fat instead of requiring Dr. Nees to break up your fat with cannulas manually. Power-assisted liposuction uses less force to break up your unwanted fat and requires smaller incisions than traditional lipo. The procedure is still effective at removing unwanted fat from large parts of your body, and also has a more rapid and less painful recovery period.

TICKLE LIPOSUCTION

Tickle liposuction is a type of power-assisted liposuction that’s ideal for eliminating excess fat with a short recovery period. Tickle lipo uses innovative equipment that uses vibration and rotation to break up your unwanted fat for easy and precise suction removal. Tickle liposuction removes your fat at the same time that’s emulsified, cutting down the time needed for the operation. Also, you only need a local anesthetic for tickle liposuction.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction provides physical and mental benefits. First and foremost, liposuction enhances your appearance. It helps you look slender, toned, and contoured. It also provides a more even distribution of fat. For example, if you have a trouble spot such as extra fat on your hips or thighs, liposuction can make you look more proportionate.

While liposuction isn’t a weight loss procedure, it does reduce your overall weight, which provides a wide range of health benefits. For example, it reduces the stress on your joints and your risk of arthritis. Additionally, reaching and maintaining a healthy weight reduces your risk of heart problems, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Liposuction can also improve your self-esteem and boost your mental health. If you’ve been working hard to lose weight and look amazing, only to get stuck at a plateau and not be able to get rid of a stubborn pocket of fat, you may feel frustrated, discouraged, or even angry. Negative self-talk about your physical appearance takes a toll on your overall mental wellness and is self-defeating. Liposuction can help you reach your goals and restore your confidence and self-esteem.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LIPOSUCTION?

If you’re in good health and within 30% of your ideal body weight, you may be an excellent candidate for liposuction. Liposuction isn’t a weight-loss procedure, but it does remove stubborn fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR LIPOSUCTION?

Dr. Nees gives you customized instructions on how to prepare for your liposuction during your consultation. For example, if you smoke, you should quit at least two to four weeks before your operation. Additionally, let Dr. Nees know about any medications, vitamins, or supplements that you take regularly. Some substances can increase your risk of bleeding, and you may need to cut down or stop taking certain medicines before your surgery. Also, if your liposuction procedure requires a sedative, you will need to avoid eating and drinking for several hours before your operation.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT WHILE I RECOVER FROM LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction is a major surgery, and depending on the specific type of procedure, your recovery can take up to eight weeks. You may have swelling, bruising, and some discomfort as your body heals. Dr. Nees recommends wearing compression garments to reduce swelling and help your body smooth and redistribute any remaining fat for a proportionate, contoured appearance.

You will notice your results as your swelling subsides. To maintain your new, slender appearance, you should continue to eat a nutritious, healthy diet and exercise after Dr. Nees says it’s safe for you to return to your regular activities.
